Application of Functional Neurology And Chiropractic In A Post-Stroke Patient Rehabilitation: A Retrospective Case Study

Objective: The objective of this case study is to explore a retrospective rehabilitation of a post-stroke patient utilizing functional neurology and chiropractic.

Clinical Presentation: A Caucasian male, age 67, presented one year after having two strokes within two days (and a history of 3 other strokes within the ten years prior). He suffered from decreased functional capacity related to decreased sensation and motor control of both hands as well as mild dysarthria and decreased right arm swing.

Intervention and Outcomes: The patient care was approached with a combination of Functional Neurology and Chiropractic care. The patient was assessed and adjusted with chiropractic utilizing a combination Diversified Technique, Thompson Technique, and Activator Methods® technique. Functional Neurological interventions include primarily applications of heat, vibration, Interactive Metronome®, and cortical exercises in order to increase Cerebellar, and cortical functioning. Home Exercises were given to facilitate cerebellar and cortical functions to support the care undertaken in the clinic. Within 3 months, the patient regained the ability to dress (improved fine motor skills), speak more clearly and faster, increased right arm swing amplitude, and increased confidence in the usage of his upper extremities.

Conclusions: Chiropractic care and Functional Neurology are shown in the treatment of a post-stroke patient. The patient saw improvements in motoric function and sensation of both hands, improved the motoric function of the mouth and tongue, improved right arm swing amplitude.
